Würzburg is a city of 130,000 on the banks of the River Main. It was long the capital of the Duchy of Franken and, with its magnificent Baroque buildings, is an important holiday destination. The town is at the heart of the Franken wine region, which still uses flat, oval-shaped Bocksbeutel wine bottles.

Human settlements in Würzburg go back to at least 1000 BC when Celts erected a fort on the site of the present Marienburg. In the mid-seventh century, it became a Frankish ducal seat.
