Until the completion of the Dom, Groß St Martin, An Groß St Martin, was the largest church in Cologne. Originally built from 1150 to 1250, this Romanesque church with its fortress-like square tower and four octagonal turrets, still is a major feature on the Cologne skyline. It was originally a Benedictine monastery church built on what was then an island in the Rhine. The church was virtually destroyed duringWorldWar II and the reconstruction has a stark, almost naked interior.
