With a population of nearly 50,000 (that triples in the summer months), Fréjus is a very big town compared to the hamlets of the massifs. But the Mediterranean ambiance takes the edge off any sense of urban pressure. The Roman founders must have felt the call to what the locals term <em>la farniente</em> too (far-NYEN-tay, borrowed from Italian, means loafing around). Some of the many ruins scattered about suggest that, along with its sister town Saint Raphaël, right next door, Fréjus was a Roman vacation resort.

<strong>Massif de l’Estérel</strong>

North and east of the Massif des Maures, the Estérel stretches from Fréjus-Saint Raphaël in the west, to La Napoule, just south of Cannes. Much like the Maures in terms of its flora and fauna but about a quarter of its area, this is a densely forested, rugged terrain. Its volcanic origins show in a base of distinctive red porphyritic stone and in the profile of Mt. Vinaigre, at 614 m/2,000 feet, its highest point.
