Up the hill on the D15, around a hairpin turn and without warning, Gordes bursts into view. This is one of the most famous vistas in Provence. In fact the Bélvèdere, a rocky vantage point along the way, is known locally as monkey rock because of all the tourists who stop there to gape and take photographs. Seen from this angle, the 12th-century perched village with its ramparts, spirals around a bluff at the edge of the Vaucluse. It has been the subject of thousands of paintings, possibly millions of postcards and no matter how familiar it may be, it is still breathtaking.</p>
