It is most notably a tourist mecca, filled with restaurants, art galleries, shops and boutiques. It is also an historic town that was the Royal Capital of Hawaii during the early part of the 19th century. In the early and mid 1800s, too, Lahaina became an important whaling port, overrun by lawless whalers, and beginning in 1823 when the first missionaries arrived on the island, mostly from New England, the town became a prominent center for missionary activity.
