The old Jewish quarter in the western part of the fortified city begins at the intersection of the streets Taller del Moro, Santo Tomé and El Salvador. The easiest way to reach it is from the Catedral via Calle de La Trinidad running west past its northern façade. Before the Jews were expelled from the city and the country with the Catholic edict of 1492, they thrived in this area of narrow, cobbled streets and now-vanished synagogues. Of the 11 or so synagogues that once welcomed worshippers, only two remain.
