<p>Vaison la Romaine is a festive town, but the real reasons for visiting Vaison la Romaine are the Roman residential districts and the medieval <em>haute ville</em>. Here, almost 40 acres (of an estimated 150 to 175) of streets, shops, large residential villas (some of the most spacious in Roman Gaul), thermal baths and working people’s quarters have been unearthed.</p>

The first time I saw Vaison la Romaine, people were singing in the streets. I had wandered out of lavender country and down through the wooded hills that encircle the town, not knowing what to expect. Small groups sang harmony around the fountains, à cappella quartets hummed in the parks and along a boulevard of cafés different choruses rehearsed, led by conductors in halter tops, shorts and straw hats.
